Agnes
Chestnut
Oct 16, 1936 — Jun 28, 2025
Galivants Ferry
Agnes Johnson Chestnut, 88, of Galivants Ferry, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at McLeod Health Loris following a period of declining health. She was born in Marion County on October 16, 1936, the daughter of the late Monroe Johnson and the late Flossie Martin Johnson.
Agnes was a soft-spoken, quiet, and humble woman who treated everyone with kindness. Through the years, she worked hard to take care of her nine children, cooking three meals a day, and working in the tobacco fields of Galivants Ferry. Agnes loved to entertain family and visitors, and you could always expect to be offered a cup of coffee, her favorite beverage. She loved to sit by the window and watch her flowers grow in the summer sunshine. Agnes enjoyed watching television with her family, especially Gunsmoke and playing with her chocolate labs. It was no surprise that she named her labs, Marshall Dillon and Miss Kitty, after her favorite television characters. She has seen a lot in her almost 89 years, but now she has a new body and is loving on her family that predeceased her.
In addition to her parents, Agnes was predeceased by her husband, Marvin Chestnut, Sr., two sons, Glenn Chestnut and Carl Chestnut, a daughter, Dorothy Chestnut, brothers, Bernice Johnson, A.M. Johnson, and Ernest Johnson, and a sister, Mary Johnson.
She is survived by three sons, Marvin Chestnut, Jr., Alvie Chestnut (Carol), and Roger Chestnut (Lora); three daughters, Annie Chestnut, Jeanette Accardo (Michael), and Martha Chestnut, a daughter-in-law, Page Chestnut; eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two nieces..
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in the chapel of the funeral home with Reverend Rocky Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Gethsemane Baptist Church Cemetery in Galivants Ferry.
If you would like to remember Agnes, the family suggests that donations be made in her memory to the Horry County Animal Care Center, 1923 Industrial Park Road, Conway, South Carolina 29526 or to the National Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org/donate.
