Obituary

Betty Stone McKenzie, 87, of Mullins passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family and into the arms of her Heavenly Father, joining her beloved Oscar on Saturday, January 25, 2020.  She was born in Lumberton, North Carolina on March 25, 1932, the daughter of the late Samuel J.R. Stone and Lillian Stone.

Betty was the epitome of a true Southern lady, a Steel Magnolia, who was loved and admired by all who knew her. She was a woman who wore many hats and could multi-task before it even became a known term.  Betty was a beloved daughter, adored wife, and the greatest mother anyone could ever have. She was a farmer, a cook, a nurse, a teacher and a talented businesswoman. Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, but most of all she was a farmer's wife.  She was Oscar's right hand "man", pitching in whenever and wherever she was needed. She was a major factor in the success of the operation of the farm, as well as managing their home and their children. In addition to those accomplishments she was also the first female Sunday School Director of Mullins First Baptist Church as well as Director of the Junior Department of the Sunday School for twenty-five years, a teacher at the Child Development Center of the church and a Vacation Bible School teacher. Betty served as the first President of the Women in Rural Electric Coop of Marion County, a Girl Scout Leader, a member of the Eastern Star, the Jaycettes, and the Scotch Home Development Club. However, her greatest achievement was the family that she created with her beloved Oscar. They had a partnership and a love affair that lasted over 70 years.  When she lost Oscar in September of 2019, her heart was literally broken, and she never fully recovered. It is such a blessing to know they are once again together for eternity.  Her motto in life was Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which gives me strength" and that she did.

In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by the love of her life, Oscar Keith McKenzie and an infant daughter, Sharon McKenzie.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandra M. Hunter (Eric) of Winston-Salem, Teresa F. McKenzie of Mullins, Sheila M. McKenzie of Lake View, and Paula-Keith Page (Russell) of Mullins; eight grandchildren, Ashley Carroll Watson (Chris), Jami Leigh Carroll Myers (Murray), Justin-Keith McKenzie (Erin), Brittany Faye Brown, Samantha McKenzie, MacKenzie "Bop" Page, Tyler Page, Sallie-Keith Sharon Page, and her beloved great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2020 in the Fellowship Hall of Mullins First Baptist Church.  Funeral services will follow the visitation at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church with Reverend Robbie Baxley officiating.

If you would like to remember Betty, the family suggests that memorials be made in her memory to Mullins First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 443, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.

The family would like to thank Addie Page who assisted us in many ways as well as the health care providers at Patriot Hospice and Dr. James R. Carroll for his care of Betty and Oscar for over thirty years.
