Obituary

Death is not the end. For the believer, it is the most glorious beginning.

Carol Munson Harrelson, 89, of Mullins, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, and joined his beloved wife, Marilyn and his son, Mike, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. He was born in Mullins on May 24, 1935, the son of the late Munson Harrelson and the late Mary Dimmery Harrelson.

Carol was a man of integrity that was faithful to God, devoted to his family, loyal to his friends, and always willing to help anyone who needed it. Carol spent many years working with Piggly Wiggly in Mullins before transitioning to another aspect of the food industry. He worked in food sales with Bay Brokerage, Martha White, W. Lee Flowers, and Pillsbury. During this time, Carol was chosen as "Salesman of the Year" for his outstanding service in the food retailing industry.

Carol served his country as a proud American for 23 ½ years in the South Carolina Army National Guard, where he served part of his time as Food Service Sergeant. This was the perfect job for him, as he loved to cook. He was well-known for his fish stew and loved to share it with others. He was also a member of the former Mullins Jaycees.

Carol had a close, loving relationship with his sister, Patsy H. Taylor. They called each other many times a day, kept up with each other's schedules, and loved going out to eat or cooking and eating with each other and others. Carol loved his family, friends, and church families. He enjoyed his retirement years and spent them enjoying simple pleasures such as riding through the neighborhood on his golf cart, visiting friends, and spending time with his family. His faith in God allowed him to face the loss of his wife in 2020 and his son, just five months ago.

From a young age, Carol attended Macedonia Methodist Church and was an active member while there. Following the passing of his wife, he joined the Mullins Presbyterian Church, where he was able to worship alongside his daughter and sister. He loved both churches and looked forward to June every year to work with the members of Mission Mullins. He also enjoyed attending the Men of Mullins Prayer Breakfast. His life was made up of "Acts of Service" and doing for others. He never met a stranger, and if he didn't know you, he would very quickly.

In addition to his parents, Carol was predeceased by his wife of sixty-five years, Marilyn Beth Brown Harrelson, his son, Mike Harrelson, and a sister, Mary Grace Neal.

He is survived by his loving children, Susan H. Tapp (Parker) and Scott Harrelson (Hugh); a sister, Patsy H. Taylor; four grandchildren, Andrea Harrelson, Kelly Tapp McColl (Tally), Devon Harrelson, and Carly H. Sessions (Clayton); three great-grandchildren, Parker McColl, Graham McColl, and Savannah Sessions, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, November 23, 2024, in the sanctuary of Mullins Presbyterian Church with Reverend Jason Brewer and Reverend Brian Preveaux officiating. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.

If you would like to remember Carol, the family suggests that donations be made in his memory to McLeod Hospice House, P.O. Box 100551, Florence, South Carolina 29502 or to Mullins Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 671, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
