Derrick Morgan
Elliott
Feb 24, 1965 — Feb 16, 2020
Nichols
Derrick Morgan Elliott, 54, of Nichols passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 16, 2020 surrounded by his family. The third child and only son of Carl and Joan Elliott, Derrick was born on February 24, 1965. His sister, Karla claimed him as her baby, and he became an immediate best friend to his sister, Tammy.
Derrick was a true outdoorsman who loved to farm, fish, duck hunt, camp and spend time with family and friends. As a child, Derrick would hide his school books so he could stay home from school and spend time on the farm with his parents. Later he worked alongside his father growing their family business, Elliott Farms, as they planted and harvested tobacco, wheat, soybeans, corn, and cotton. Derrick was the first farmer in Horry County to grow tobacco plants in a greenhouse, now a widely accepted practice. His other business endeavors include D&C Land Management, Good Grass Turf Sod Farm and being a top producer for Perdue.
On September 29, 1990, Derrick married the love of his life, Cheryl. He became the proud father of two daughters, Heather and Erica. His love of outdoor pursuits continued whether on the farm or on his boat in one of the local rivers. Derrick enjoyed spending time with his friends, whom he loved and considered family. During the last few years, Derrick found great joy in being "Granddaddy" and passing along his love of the outdoors as he taught Sadie, Sullivan and Ayden to fish, drive tractors and explore his farmland on an ATV or motorcycle. Derrick is remembered by his friends and family as one who was kind, generous, patient and full of joy, always greeting everyone with a smile.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 21, 2020 in the chapel of Meares Funeral Home in Mullins, SC with Reverend Shawn Brashear officiating. The family will receive friends in the foyer of the funeral home following the service. Derrick will be laid to rest by his family in a private service at Elliott Cemetery.
Donations can be made in Derrick's memory to the MUSC Palliative Care Program, ( https://connect2.musc.edu/giving ) or the Elliott Cemetery Fund, c/o Terry Wayne Elliott, 151 Leaning Branch Road, Nichols, South Carolina 29581.
