"Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift." 2 Corinthians 9:15
Edward White Whittington, Jr., 75, of Mullins passed away peacefully Friday, October 27, 2023, surrounded by God's love and his adoring family. There is no doubt he felt the love in that room. He was born in Florence, South Carolina, on June 4, 1948, the son of the late Edward White Whittington, Sr. and the late Sara Baker Whittington. Eddie was the epitome of a good man. He will be remembered for his generous spirit, his passion for helping others, and his unwavering love for his family. His legacy of service to his fellow man and his kindness will continue to live on through his family and those whose lives he touched.
Eddie was a graduate of Marion High School where he developed a love for football. He received a full football scholarship to the University of South Carolina which began a lifetime of being a faithful fan of his Gamecocks. He was a member of the 1969 ACC Peach Bowl Championship Team under the late Coach Paul Dietzel and a member of the USC Lettermen Association. After graduation, he attended the University of South Carolina School of Law and obtained his Juris Doctor degree.
Eddie along with his loving wife, Donna, returned to Mullins in 1974, where he began his successful career as an attorney. He had a true passion for the law and looked forward to going to the office every day. A true advocate for his clients, his wisdom and guidance were a source of comfort for many. He served as counsel for several organizations including Marco Rural Water and Mullins Housing Authority. He was a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, South Carolina Trial Lawyer's Association, South Carolina Defense Association, and was President of the Marion County Bar Association. His reputation for being a lawyer with integrity and high morals earned him a place on the South Carolina Commission of Lawyer Conduct.
Eddie also served on various boards through the years including the Marion County Healthcare Foundation, Pee Dee Academy, Davis National Bank, and First National South. He was a member of the Marion-Mullins Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.
Outside of his professional life, Eddie was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandchildren, his sons-in-law, and his buddies. His happy place was Cherry Grove, where he enjoyed spending weekends with his family. He loved the Christmas holidays, and he enjoyed every episode of Gunsmoke.
His greatest joy was his family. His love for his wife, his girls, and his grandchildren was endless. He cherished his time with them and spent many hours following them to their various sporting events, hunting and fishing. He leaves them with valuable lessons learned and many beautiful memories.
In addition to his parents, Eddie was predeceased by a brother, Bill Whittington.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Donna Meares Whittington; his precious daughters, Leah Whittington Weston and her husband, Carter and their children, Jack and Kate, and Lindsay Whittington Creech and her husband, Stephen and their children, Caroline, Mack, and Elizabeth, all of Columbia; his brother, Dr. John Whittington and his wife, Jane of Marion; his sister-in-law, Barbara Brown Whittington of Hickory, North Carolina, and his lap buddy, Bitty.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2, 2023 in the chapel of the funeral home with Reverend Kem Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at Cedardale Cemetery.
