Gene McKenzie

Forest Eugene “Gene” McKenzie, 88, of Mullins, passed away at his home on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. He was born in Dillon County on August 29, 1937, the son of the late Huger Brunson McKenzie and the late Addie Carter McKenzie.

Gene was a fiercely independent and proud man whose life was shaped by hard work. He spent over forty years working in the propane gas industry and even after his retirement, the company would continue to call him for consultation and his expertise.

From a young age, Gene was known for his determination that carried him through any challenge, especially as his health declined. A jack of all trades, if he set his mind to something, it was as good as done. He took immense pride in his home, his yard, and most importantly his family. His most defining quality was the way he made others feel. He was personable and completely genuine. A member of Mullins First Baptist Church and the Who-So-Ever-Will Fellowship Class, he was always active and involved in the ministry there.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Peggy Joyce Gibson McKenzie, brothers, Bill McKenzie and Richard McKenzie, and sisters, Dorothy Watson, Katherin Plummer, and Janice McKenzie.

He is survived by his daughter, Gina McKenzie Crooks and her husband, Julian; four grandchildren, Hillary Thompson (Drew), Katlin Anderson (Joshua), Julieanna Simmons (Taylor) and Lauryn Barden (Luke); nine great-grandchildren, Noah, Oaklynn, Mila, Tenille, Scottie, Jacob, Hattie, Layla, and Baby Anderson, and his loyal canine companion, Chloe.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 11, 2026, in the Fellowship Hall of Mullins First Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of the church with Reverend Robbie Baxley officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Dillon.

If you would like to remember Gene, donations may be made in his memory to Mullins First Baptist Church Christian Life Center, P.O. Box 443, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
