Obituary

Hazel Edwards McKenzie, 79, of Mullins passed away at her home on Sunday, January 19, 2020 with her family by her side.  She was born in Marion County on June 2, 1940, the daughter of the late William Thomas Edwards and the late Minnie Richardson Edwards.

Hazel was a true Southern lady with a love for her Lord and Savior and her family and friends. A talented seamstress, she used that talent to serve others by sewing lap robes and bags for people who were sick, who could then use them for organizing their medication.  Hazel also loved vegetable gardening and often could be found working in her garden.  She enjoyed cooking for her family using many of the vegetables that she grew herself.  She was a member of Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Dayton McKenzie, six brothers, Stacey, Lide, Earl, Bill, Bobby, and Buddy Edwards, and five sisters, Juanita Norris, Jane Causey, Letha Crawford, Maggie Cook, and Barbara Ann.

She is survived by two sons, Mitchell McKenzie and his wife, Kim of Little River and Richard McKenzie and his wife, Cynthia of Mullins; a sister, Helen Barfield of Marion; two grandchildren, Paul McKenzie of Little River and Chandler McKenzie of Mullins; three step-grandchildren, Preston Thomas (Brittany) of Lexington, SC, Cory Thomas of Gaston, SC, and Jamie Usher of Latta; five great-grandchildren, and her white fluffball cat, Casper.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Meares Funeral Home of Mullins.  Funeral services will follow the visitation at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Thad Jacobs officiating.  Interment will be at Devotion Gardens.

If you would like to remember Hazel, the family suggests that memorials be made in her memory to Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church Christian School, 214 Drew Road, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
