Obituary

Helen Hardwick Smith, 87, of Mullins passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 with her son and her best friend at her side. She was born in Horry County on January 18, 1936, the daughter of the late John Lacy Hardwick, Sr. and the late Agatha Johnson Hardwick.

Helen was a praying woman who praised God in the good times and the bad times. Her greatest joy was her son, Smitty, and she along with her late husband, Son made sure that he grew up in a loving and supportive home. Following Son's passing, Helen continued to devote her time and attention to Smitty. She loved life and talking to people and never met a stranger. Always a supporter of her nephews, Helen enjoyed attending any sporting event that they were involved in. Prior to her declining health, she enjoyed playing cards and going fishing with Smitty.

Helen will be most remembered for her service to Marion County as the former Director of Voter Registration and Elections. She ran that office with fairness and efficiency making sure that every eligible citizen had the opportunity to register to vote and participate in an election. During her tenure as Director, she also served as the President of the South Carolina Election Commission. She received many awards for her dedication to the voting process.

In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Rupert W. "Son" Smith, Jr., a brother, J.L. Hardwick and his wife, Zip, a niece, Jeanne Webster, and a nephew, Ernie Hinson.

She is survived by her son, Rupert W. "Smitty" Smith, III; a sister, Grace Hinson Grice all of Mullins, niece, Susan Ford (Travis) of Myrtle Beach, nephew, Randy Hinson (Mary Lynn) and Ernie's wife, Sherrie Hinson both of Mullins; her best friend of fifty years, Brenda Housand (Pete) of Marion; and her fur baby, Bean.

A graveside service to celebrate Helen's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 30, 2023 at Devotion Gardens with Reverend Glenn Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
