James R. Fowler, 86, of Nichols passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at MUSC Health-Marion Medical Center.  He was born in Nichols on September 6, 1934, the son of the late William and Susan Long Fowler.

James proudly served his country in the Korean War as a member of the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he began working at the Pilliod Furniture Company in Nichols, from where he eventually retired. He was happiest when he was at home watching television and smoking his pipe. He lost the love of his life, Myrtice, in 2016, but his growing family quickly filled his time and his heart.  James loved his grandchildren and especially going fishing with his grandson, Jimbo.  He loved animals and enjoyed dog sitting for his grand dogs, especially, Bandit.

In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his wife, Myrtice, five brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by two sons, James H. Fowler and his wife, Sandra of Nichols and Glenn Fowler and his wife, Cindy Lou of Florida; four grandchildren, Celena Watson (John), Jimbo Fowler (Tonya), Christina Fowler, and Jennifer Fowler; seven great-grandchildren, Jadyn, Chase, Reagan, Dawson, Austin, Savannah, and Trevor, and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Devotion Gardens with Reverend Haywood Proctor and Jimbo Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. We respectfully request that you wear a mask and practice social distancing while in the cemetery. A kind word in lieu of a handshake or hug would be greatly appreciated during these uncertain times.
