Betty Jean Smoak, of Mullins, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at her daughter's home in Columbia. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late David Byrd and the late Hyacinth Blalock Byrd.

Jean was a soft-spoken woman who touched the lives of many with her gentle nature. She dedicated many years to teaching where her patience and wisdom also made a difference in the lives of her students. A devoted mother and grandmother, she spent the last few years living with her daughter, Tamera, as Jean's health had declined. She greatly missed being involved in the activities and ministries of Mullins First Baptist Church, where she had been a member for many years.

In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by her husband, Don Smoak.

She is survived by her daughter, Tamera Balfour and her husband, Bruce of Columbia; a son, Dr. Donnie Smoak of Tampa, Florida; five granddaughters, and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, September 8, 2025, in the chapel of Meares Funeral Home in Mullins with Reverend Robbie Baxley officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. Jean will be privately entombed next to her husband at Red Hill Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in her memory to Mullins First Baptist Church Christian Life Center, P.O. Box 443, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
