Obituary

James "Jim" Spencer entered into eternal rest at his home following an extended illness on Monday, September 28, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.  He was born, October 18, 1946 in Indianola, Mississippi to the late Judge Woodrow and Frankie Smith Spencer. Jim graduated from Indianola High School in 1966 where he played drums in the school band.  He furthered his education at Delta State College where he earned his degree.

Jim continued his musical pursuits by playing professionally with "The Mark Five" and with "Buddy Key and the Continentals" until he was drafted into the United States Army. After his honorable discharge from serving his country, Jim rejoined his bands and continued to pursue his love of music.

He became employed with Dixie products and traveled throughout the United States as a sales representative and a trainer.  He ended up in Hartsville working at the Dixie plant where he was Sales Representative of the Year. He retired from Dixie products and began working for Florence Darlington Technical College as an instructor where he taught accounting.  He eventually became the director of the FDTC-Hartsville campus until his retirement in 2013.

Jim enjoyed collecting antique tools and many other hobbies. He also enjoyed participating with the 23 rd Infantry Regiment Civil War Reenactment of South Carolina for many years. He also enjoyed camping and fishing.

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by a brother, William Woodrow Spencer, Jr.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sheila Gleason Spencer of Mullins; two sons, BJ Larymore (Krystle) of Lake View and Scott Larymore (Lauren) of Johns Island; a daughter, Jamie Westby-Gibson (James) of Jackson, Mississippi; and six grandchildren, Austin, Ellynn, Kyndal, Mckynsie,  Lily James, and Carter.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Red Hill Memorial Gardens in Mullins with Reverend Jason Brewer officiating.  The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.  We respectfully request that you wear a mask and practice social distancing while in the cemetery.  A kind word in lieu of a hug or handshake would be greatly appreciated during these uncertain times.

If you would like to remember Jim, the family suggests that memorials be made in his memory to the Mullins Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 671, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.

The family would like to thank Patriot Hospice for the love and care shown for Jim.
