Jimmy Ray Hammond, 79, of Nichols passed away to his heavenly home on October 2, 2022 after a courageous battle with dementia. He was born in Mullins, South Carolina on October 24, 1942. He was predeceased by his parents, Rogers Legrand and Doris Causey Hammond.
Jimmy was a quiet-spoken, humble man who always found good in every person he met. As a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and on various committees until his health began to fail.
A paper maker by trade, Jimmy retired from International Paper in 1999. He later worked part time with Home Depot where he enjoyed meeting people and making new friends. Jimmy loved sports, his favorite being baseball. He coached youth baseball for 20 years and made a tremendous impact on the lives of many young boys. He traveled many miles watching his sons, Matt and Hank, play baseball during their high school years and while Matt was playing at Furman University. He also followed his grandsons, Ryan and Stephen watching their high school and travel ball games.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Doris Roberts Hammond; sons, Anthony "Hank" Hammond and his wife, Stephanie of Six Mile, SC and Matthew Hammond and his wife, Theresa of Smyrna, GA.; two grandsons, Ryan Hammond of Atlanta, GA and Stephen Hammond of Clemson, SC; two brothers, Danny Hammond (Bernice) and Roger Dale Hammond (Becki), both of Nichols, several nieces and nephews, in-laws, friends, and his devoted caregivers, Lillie Mae "Duke" Jordan and Louella "Lou" Green whose excellent care allowed Jimmy to remain in the comfort of his home for the last few years.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Spring Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Nichols. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
