Joene Joy
Higgins
Jul 13, 1937 — Mar 26, 2021
Mullins
Joene Joy Chekonik Higgins, 83, of Mullins passed away peacefully in her sleep and joined her Lord and Savior and her loving husband, Ty in her heavenly home. She was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on July 13, 1937, the daughter of the late Joseph Chekonik and the late June Gilberta Pearce Chekonik.
To know this sweet lady was to love her. Joene was a kind and caring person who loved her country, her church, her family and friends and flowers. A veteran of the United States Navy, she spent ten years living in Hawaii and later in Washington, DC where she worked in the office of the Surgeon General. She was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, and had so missed being able to worship in person with her church family. Her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met. She could often be found working in her yard, where she was well-known for the beautiful flowers that she grew. She enjoyed decorating, cross stitching and spending time at the beach.
In addition to her parents, Joene was predeceased by her husband, Tyrone James Higgins a brother, David Joseph Chekonik, and a grandson, Ty Higgins.
She is survived by two sons, Trent Higgins and Tommy Higgins (Amanda) both of Quincy, California; a sister-in-law, Nancy Chekonik of Marion; eight grandchildren, Brandon Higgins, Tarah Higgins, Allison Higgins, Kayla Isitt, Tyler Mecum, Aaron Mecum, Elizabeth Joene Higgins, and Alyssa Heskin; seven great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew, and her beloved pets, Rachel, Lucy, and Lulu.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Cedardale Cemetery in Mullins. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
If you would like to remember Joene, the family suggests that memorials be made in her memory to Macedonia United Methodist Church, 402 North Main Street, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
