L.G.
Winkler
Oct 13, 1935 — Apr 18, 2026
Mullins
L.G. Winkler, 90, of Mullins, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at MUSC Marion Medical Center. He was born in Cleveland, Georgia, the son of the late Robert E. Lee Winkler and the late Missouri Mandy Garrett Winkler.
L.G. leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to his country, his community, and his fellowman. L.G. was a proud United States veteran, having served his country first as a member of the U.S. Army and later in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge from military service, he spent the next fifty-four years committed to public safety, first as a member of the Mullins Police Department and later with the Marion County Sheriff's Department. He rose through the ranks, eventually serving as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Bud Richardson.
L.G. could be described as someone who didn't let "the grass grow under his feet". He loved life in the outdoors and was happiest when the smell of fresh cut grass was in the air. He could often be found on his lawnmower cutting grass, whether it was in his own yard or his neighbors down the street. He also enjoyed making things from wood. He spent countless hours creating pieces for family and friends. Whether it was a birdhouse or a piece of furniture, he had a gift for turning wood into something beautiful and useful. His willingness to help was not loud or showy-it was constant, sincere, and deeply felt by those around him.
While L.G. will be greatly missed by all who knew him, he was more than prepared and eager to meet his Lord and Savior. He was a faithful member of Mullins First Baptist Church and the Who-So-Ever-Will Sunday School Class. L.G. has won his race.
In addition to his parents, L.G. was predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-four years, Frances McDaniel Winkler, a son, Steve Winkler, one brother, and two sisters.
He is survived by two sons, Butch Winkler and Mike Winkler; his beloved granddaughter, Amber Winkler Harrelson (Jami), and a great-grandson, Tucker Harrelson.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with Reverend Robbie Baxley officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Red Hill Memorial Gardens.
If you would like to remember L.G., the family suggests that donations be made in his memory to Mullins First Baptist Church Christian Life Center, P.O. Box 443, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
