Lide
Huggins
Dec 21, 1942 — Nov 23, 2021
Myrtle Beach
Jasper Lide Huggins, 78, of Myrtle Beach passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, surrounded by his family following complications of multiple system atrophy. Born on December 21, 1942, in Mullins, South Carolina, Lide was the son of J. Lide Huggins, Jr. and Neilie Elizabeth McMillan Huggins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lacy Carl Huggins. He was a member of the 1964 graduating class of the University of South Carolina where he lettered in football and obtained a degree in business administration.
Lide was incredibly blessed to work alongside some of the best in the football business during his long career at the collegiate and professional level with coaching stints at Texas A&M, West Virginia University, and the University of Tennessee. He also served as Director of Player Personnel and later Director of Football Operations for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League. He was known as a tenacious recruiter and talent scout who built strong relationships with all his players, many that continued even beyond their playing careers. Following his time in the sports industry, Lide spent many years working with both McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach and Meares Funeral Home in Mullins.
Lide was the consummate coach in life as well. He was known for his quick wit and one-liners and passed those along to all who crossed his path. He took every opportunity to encourage others to be their best. One note out of hundreds found in his Bible read, "G.O.A.L. - God Oversees All Loads. "He was a "tell-it-like-it is" fellow and had big emotions and an even bigger heart.
Lide's greatest joys were spending time with family, reading, and listening to gospel music. He was a great friend to so many and will be missed by all.
Lide leaves behind his wife, Sondra Heath Huggins of Myrtle Beach; his daughters, Kathy Lee Huggins O'Kelly of Pickens, South Carolina, Karen Elizabeth Huggins Blakely of Charleston, and Sabrina Lynn Huggins Gibbs of Murrells Inlet, and the mother of his daughters, Sandra Lee Wiggins Huggins of Mullins. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Blakely of Charleston, Mary Peyton O'Kelley of Pickens, and Anna Grace Blakely of Albuquerque, NM; two great-grandchildren, Brayden Lee Blakely and Sophia Rose Inman, both of Albuquerque, as well as Sondra's children and family, sons, Mickey and Kathy Wiggins of Myrtle Beach, James and Lisa Wiggins of Montgomery, AL, Patrick and Janet Kirby of Tylertown, MS, Matthew and Sarah Kirby of Strawberry Plains, TN, her daughters, Cyndi and John Bailey of Kansas City, MO, Beth and Harold Kirk of Stanley, NC; sixteen additional grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, with special thanks to granddaughter, Candy Dasmerces for the love, joy and care she gave Lide.
A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 29, 2021 at McMillan Cemetery in Mullins. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. If you would like to pay your respects and sign the guestbook for Lide, you may do so by visiting Meares Funeral Home between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
If you would like to remember Lide, the family suggests that memorials be made in his memory to Mullins Presbyterian Church, 809 Sandy Bluff Church, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
