Obituary

Martha Gibson McMillan lived for 100 plus years, born November 23, 1924, and passed on into eternity on January 29, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was blessed by God and blessed many along her way.

"Mama Mac" enjoyed her family and exemplified the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22 (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and faithfulness) in support of all those she loved and encountered throughout her life, never meeting a stranger.

She met the love of her life, Billy "Mac", on a joint high school field trip to Washington, D.C., and they were married June 14, 1947, until he passed away in 1982, much too early.

She grew up in Centenary, South Carolina and graduated from Centenary High School. She went on to graduate from Winthrop College and became a physical education teacher, later retiring from the Mullins School District.

When she began her career, she coached girl's high school basketball in an era when the team only played on half court. She loved physical education and enjoyed a life's work of physical activity well into her nineties. She was often seen by those passing by her home raking leaves under her beloved magnolia trees early in the morning, picking up sticks around the pecan trees or the trash near the perimeters of her yard, and of course out of the ditches on the roadsides.

"Mama Mac" was a very active member of the Mullins Presbyterian Church and supported all its programs of service to share the love of her Savior, Jesus Christ.

She enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends who have gone on before her. She also enjoyed her memberships in the Tussie Mussie Garden Club, Retired Teachers Organization, Scotch Improvement Supper Club and the Farm Bureau.

Martha Gibson McMillan, wife of the late William Vandyke McMillan, Sr., daughter of the late David Franklin and Mary Stanley Gibson, is survived by her sons, Samuel Davis (Jill) McMillan, Franklin Gibson (Mary Ellen) McMillan, George Reaves (Cindy) McMillan II, her daughter-in-law, Anita Reeves McMillan, her grandchildren, Buster (Kirsten) McMillan, Jamie (Jill) McMillan, Alex (AJ) McMillan, Lucas (Lisa) McMillan, Jason (Kristin) McMillan, Austin (Jay) McMillan, Billy McMillan, Harriet McMillan, Paula Anne (David) Douglas, Brittney (Bradley) Smith, Ginni Reaves (Brett) Hester, and her great-grandchildren, Graceanne, Liam, Arie, Bella, Van, Will and Henry McMillan, Wade, Reaves, and Tindal Smith, and Magnolia Douglas.

She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Neil (Cathy) McMillan, a sister-in-law, Doris Ann McMillan, and many devoted nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own.

She was predeceased in addition to her husband and parents, by her son, William Vandyke McMillan, Jr., a daughter-in-law, Donna Jean Leaphart McMillan, her brothers, Franklin, Brunson, and Ernest Gibson, her sisters, Elizabeth Stuckey, Mary Louise Gibson, Evelyn Farmer, and Joyce Davis.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., Saturday, February 1, 2025, in the fellowship hall of Mullins Presbyterian Church and at other times at the McMillan home. A service to celebrate the life of "Mama Mac" will follow the visitation, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Reverend Jason Brewer officiating. Interment will follow at McMillan Cemetery.

Donations in her memory may be made to Mullins Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 671, Mullins, South Carolina 29574 or to McMillan Cemetery, c/o Phil McMillan, 3203 Gilchrist Road, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
