Mary
Mcmillan
Jul 8, 1930 — Aug 5, 2023
Mullins
On Saturday afternoon, August 5, 2023, Mary Register McMillan, 93, widow of John Arch McMillan and mother of Debbie, Arch, and Lisa, passed away peacefully and entered into eternal life with her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born in Mullins on July 8, 1930, the daughter of the late Tillman Register and the late Charity Catherine Lanier Register.
Mary graduated from Mullins High School and from the McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing. She had worked at the Mullins Hospital and later as Dr. Randy Elvington's nurse at his Nichols office. Not only did she work outside the home, but she also helped her beloved husband, John Arch, on the farm. Together they raised their three children in a Christian home surrounded by love. Through the years, Mary supported her children in whatever activity they were involved in including having been a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader. As her family grew, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mary was a woman of great strength and independence, who valued her family and her faith. She was an active member of Mullins First Baptist Church since the 1950's and was the oldest member. She was a member and treasurer of the Pearls of Wisdom Sunday School Class, a member of the Floretta Boyd WMU, the Stitches of Love group, and served on many church committees. Always service oriented, her hands were never idle as she sought to do good each day. Mary used her heart and hands to bless the lives of young girls having sewn over six hundred dresses to be distributed through missions both at home and overseas.
Mary held tightly to God's love and her faith as she faced her recent health issues and did not let them deter her spirit or her smile.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, John Arch McMillan, Sr., five brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her son, Arch McMillan (Lesley Brown) of Mullins; two daughters, Debbie M. Beeson of Mullins and Lisa M. Gibson of Socastee; six grandchildren, Amy (Michael) Bryant, Beth (Michael) Hucks, Bryan (Rachel) Beeson, Jebb (Jamie) McMillan, Meg McMillan, and Trey Gibson, thirteen great-grandchildren. Mary was the eighth of nine children and is survived by her sister, Elizabeth R. Williams of Hanahan, South Carolina.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 8, 2023 in the sanctuary of Mullins First Baptist Church with Reverend Robbie Baxley and Dr. Michael Bryant officiating. The family will receive friends in the hallway outside the sanctuary following the service. A private committal service will be held at McMillan Cemetery.
