Obituary

Mavis Owens Byrd, 76, of Mullins passed away peacefully on Monday morning, March 28, 2022 at MUSC Health Marion Medical Center with Kimberly and Amanda by her side. She fought a courageous battle as she was willing to do whatever it took to have one more day with her family. Mavis was born in Marion County on December 13, 1945, the only daughter of Major Owens and Bertha Cooper Owens.

Mavis loved her family and lived every day for her granddaughter, Amanda. She was a strong Christian woman who dedicated her life to her Lord and Savior and to her family. She taught Sunday School and worked with the children and the youth in the church. She missed being in church as her health failed but enjoyed watching the sermons on Facebook. Always a hard worker, Mavis kept children in her home while she raised her own, helped on the family farm, and retired from retail sales. She loved baking, painting, gardening, and quilting and took courses to learn more and become better at it.

Mavis was predeceased by an infant daughter, Stephanie Shannon Byrd and two brothers, Russell Owens and Harold Owens.

She is survived by a son, Reverend Steve Byrd and his wife, Sally of Florence; her daughter, Kimberly Byrd (Michael) of Nichols; a granddaughter who was like a daughter, Amanda Byrd of Mullins; three brothers, Major Owens, Jr. (Beverly) of Marion, Buck Owens (Beckey) of Mullins; Andy Owens (John) of Rockville, Maryland; four grandchildren, Amber Vick, Brooke Young, Baili Taylor and Amanda Byrd; five great-grandchildren, her beloved dog, Gracie.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 1, 2022 at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 11:00 a.m., Friday in the chapel of the funeral home with Reverend Robbie Baxley and Reverend Thad Jacobs officiating.
