Obituary

Peter Grunert, 91, of Nichols, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center. He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut on May 7, 1935, the son of the late Robert Grunert and the late Constance Victoria Wilkins Grunert.

For many years, Peter worked as a carpenter in Connecticut, building homes and furniture. He had a reputation for hard work and beautiful craftsmanship. He took great pride in his work, treating every project -big or small- with the same care.

Following his retirement, he along with his wife, Phyllis relocated to South Carolina. Nichols was the perfect place to settle, as Peter was an avid golfer, and at the time Pineland Country Club was located on the outskirts of Nichols. Whether it was an early tee time, a tricky sand trap, or just enjoying the company of good friends on the golf course, it felt like home to him. At the age of 50, Peter took up jogging. He found both joy and solace through his daily jogs which led him to participate in numerous marathons through the years. He also had a deep appreciation for the visual arts, particularly photography and painting. His children were the proud recipients of many of his works. Peter treasured his family and the life he shared with his beloved wife. Even after her passing, his devotion never faded. He faithfully visited her resting place, honoring her memory and the enduring love they shared throughout their lives.

Peter was an active member of the Church of the Infant Jesus Mission in Marion. A Rite of Committal will be held at the graveside at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 3, 2026, at Cedardale Cemetery with Father Svlvère Baloza-Baloza officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins.

In addition to his parents, Peter was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Phyllis Hoyt Grunert, three brothers, and a sister.

He is survived by a son, Peter Cecil Grunert; two daughters, Cynthia Stoorza and Carrie Chenault and her husband, Anthony; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made in Peter’s memory to Church of the Infant Jesus Mission, 4534 North Highway 501 Business, Marion, South Carolina 29571.
