Obituary

On Sunday evening, May 24, 2026, Reginald Glenn McDaniel, Jr. slipped peacefully away with his loving sisters, Barbara Anne and Lisa, by his side. He was born in Mullins on December 6, 1948, the son of the late Reginald Glenn McDaniel and the late Marion Montgomery Vaughan McDaniel.

Reggie was a 1966 graduate of Carlisle Military School in Bamberg, South Carolina. With his training from the school, he made the decision to enter the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country. Following his time in service, Reggie worked with Nye Drug Store and later transitioned to work with Dupont Industries in Florence. He enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to visit many countries throughout Europe.

Reggie worked with Dupont for many years, but his true calling was teaching others about the past. He became the curator for the South Carolina Tobacco Museum and was indispensable in turning a small town museum into a state museum. The museum received numerous visitors throughout the years covering over 27 countries. He didn’t just read history, he lived it, bringing to life the people and events that shaped the tobacco industry in Mullins.

Reggie was a passionate historian and a keeper of vintage, antique and beautiful items. His home was a personal museum in itself, filled with cherished items he collected over the years. He was a vault of knowledge and fascinating stories, that he delighted in telling his visitors. There is no doubt that he is probably meeting and quizzing his forefathers right now.

Reggie was a member of Mullins Presbyterian Church for many years. Whether he was making people laugh with his infectious sense of humor or tales of the past, he had a way of drawing people in and making them feel at ease. As a brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, he provided a haven of love and laughter. His life is a reminder that kindness and humility are among the most meaningful ways to live.

In addition to his parents, Reggie was predeceased by his stepmother, Bobbie Jean Baxley McDaniel.

He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Anne McDaniel Alford and her husband, Chandis and Lisa McDaniel Nolan and her husband, Michael; nieces and nephews, Anne Lauren Jolly, Bebe Tempest (Austin), Mary Catherine Hammond (Justin), Chandler Alford (Jaden), and Ashley Brown (Travis); several great-nieces and great-nephews; a special cousin, Gibbie Webster Peeler, and many cousins and close friends.

A service to celebrate Reggie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 29, 2026, at Mullins Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Agape Hospice nurses, Susie, Jennifer, and Christonya and Reggie’s caregivers, Sheila Ammons, Melvinia Wade, Andreana Williams, and Nikki Williams for the skilled and compassionate care they provided to him as his health declined.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Reggie’s memory to Mullins Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 671, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.

1 Peter 4:10 tells us, “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” Reggie McDaniel did just that.
