Shelby Jean
Rowell
Jun 26, 1939 — Aug 27, 2024
Nichols
Shelby Jean Hammond Rowell, 85, of Nichols, widow of Dick Rowell, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Horry County on June 26, 1939, the daughter of the late Talmadge Hammond and the late Louise Owens Hammond.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Shelby maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the hearts of everyone that knew her. She cared deeply for her family and friends because that was who she was. She made sure that everyone that entered her home felt loved and full. Over the years many people have sat at her table enjoying her Southern cooking talents especially her homemade biscuits. Mrs. Shelby was the happiest when she could gather her family together and prepare meals for them. She often used her own vegetables that she grew in her garden, as well as pears that came from the pear tree in her yard. As the family gathers in the future, her spirit will always be felt, and she will forever remain in their hearts.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Shelby was also predeceased by a son, Lee Ray Rowell, her grandson, James Lee Ford, and three brothers, Dallas, M.J., and James Hammond.
She is survived by two sons, T.L. Rowell (Michele) and Hugh Rowell, both of Nichols; three daughters, Susie Watts (David) of Loris, Nancy Stanley (Larry) of Mollie, NC, and Gail Ford (Jerry DuBall) of Nichols; a sister, Lynette "Lennie" Floyd also of Nichols; nine grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins and at other times at Mrs. Shelby's home. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 30th at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols with Pastor Mario Alvarez officiating.
If you would like to remember Mrs. Shelby, the family suggests that donations be made in her memory to Riverside Care, 8431 Elvington Road, Nichols, South Carolina 29581.
The family would like to thank the staff of McLeod Loris Hospital and Amedisys Hospice for the skilled and compassionate care their mother received.
